Before You Rile Up Your Spurs Shaudenfreude

So the NBA came out today saying that Derek Fisher really did foul Brent Barry in game 4 of the Spurs/Lakers series. Now, I’m no commissioner, but it seem like there’s not a lot of upside to admitting you make a bad call this late after the game. Now the debate will rage between the giant media machines of Los Angeles and San Antonio sports contrarians about how much this one call impacted the NBA postseason. Again.

But one bad call does not deserve another. This entire Barry/Fisher play is really a moot point if the shot clock gets reset off of Fisher’s miss. See, if we had eagle-eyed androids in those grey official’s uniforms, there wouldn’t have ever been a Brent Barry play, because LA gets the offensive rebound and runs the clock out / shoots some free throws.

The NBA… where always wondering if the officials are working for the mafia happens.

Today Andy Pettitte held a press conference in which he admitted to the world his PED use. Who would have thought that the one pitcher to admit drug use (and come out looking like a saint) during the Clemens/McNamee saga would have been Pettitte? Well at least Jason Giambi and his $23 million contract are good for something. One of these days athletes will realize that America really IS a forgiving country. The sooner they put their pride behind them, the sooner their lives will actually get back to normal. For Pettitte, that return to normalcy began today. Now, maybe Giambi can give him tips on winning the Viagra Comeback Player of the Year.

Lebron’s Legs are Fragile, Unless There’s Cash Involved

Lebron James, when being interviewed during media day for the NBA All-Star Game, was asked if he had been invited to the dunk contest, but he interrupted the interviewer before he was even done with the question, saying “No, that wouldn’t be fun.”

When asked if he would do it if there was a million dollar prize, fun re-entered the picture, and he said that he “might rest [his] legs for a couple of weeks to do that.”

A couple of weeks? When Dr. J dunked from the free throw line at the first contest, they did it during halftime.

Bob Costas finally uses his pompous wittiness for good.

Something that’s always bugged me about Bob Costas is his constant attitude of journalistic supremacy. Being on Mike & Mike, that attitude is obviously justified, and he makes sure to bring up the one thing we know Greenberg doesn’t want to talk about… other than Golic’s steroid use.

This train rolls on Shaq Diesel

I understand that it’s not hip to celebrate moves that are apparently stupid, but these are my feelings on the Shaq trade:

1) We weren’t getting it done in the first place, and I have little reason to believe that the same lineup +Grant Hill was going to get us to the mountain top. In fact, based on our performance versus a Parker-less Spurs, I seriously doubt that.

2) I’m not convinced Shaq completely ruins our style of basketball. He won’t be on the court 100% of the time, so this is something we’ll just have to see work out.

3 (and most importantly) HE’S SHAQ. This is bigger than when we had Barkley, and even bigger than Nash. It’s just cool, there’s no way to avoid that. He may be well past his prime, but this sort of thing has worked before in other places, so why can’t it work here? If it doesn’t work, at least Kerr will be gone. This shakes things up, and that might be what’s needed considering were were a great regular season team before, maybe the big guy can help us get over the hump.

I’m on board with this, because at least he’ll probably want to be here. I also want to see him jack up Tim Duncan, and that’s worth anything.
